Unfortunately, the first flights of stairs are often used by homeless people as an open-air toilet, so there is frequently a bad smell and leftover waste. This can all be avoided by going further up. Locals know this and do not use those stairs to exit, but you should still pay attention to the occasional tourist who cannot find the escalators or elevators to leave the station.
